Not a nice-to-have. A studied intervention.
Dance for children with disabilities has been measured, pooled and reviewed. This page lists what was found and where.
What the reviews found
A systematic review and meta-analysis of dance in children with disabilities examined effects across four dimensions — physical, cognitive, psychological and social.1 A separate 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of dance interventions for individuals with cerebral palsy drew on fourteen studies, nine of them pooled, and found a large overall effect for cognitive, motor and social-emotional function.2
Physical
Gross motor skills, balance, coordination, strength and flexibility.
Cognitive
Memory, sequencing and sustained attention, built through choreographed movement patterns.
Psychological
Reduced anxiety, improved self-esteem, and greater physical confidence and body awareness.
Social
Communication skills, reduced isolation, and a real sense of belonging among peers.
Across conditions
The evidence base extends across the conditions the curriculum is written for: dance has been shown to support motor, cognitive and psychosocial functioning in autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and intellectual disability.3
Why the demand is real
More than 8.1 million students ages 3–21 received special-education services under IDEA in 2024, an increase of 3.8% in a single year.4 In a community needs assessment of the dance sector, 90% of studios reported being approached by families seeking inclusive classes, and 75% of parents said the availability of adaptive classes matters to them.5
